Hi Robin. GRE is manadatory for masters(Science/Engineering) program, but not required for “Co-op” programs;for those programs only TOEFL is required.

Coop programs are usually special programs that have a work component in the real industrial world (which you get paid for and everything), as oppose of research that only occurs in the academic world (at least that’s how it works in my coop program). Coop programs are a great way to finance your own education, but they also take longer to complete in most cases.

At the moment I’m in a BBA & Bmath co-op program with the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. I highly recommend getting into coop if you get the chance, it helps in both gaining valuable experience and in financing your education (which can get expensive).

Plus, being in coop allows you to get into temporary positions with jobs that you never thought could fit what you’re studying… for example, that’s how I got a placement here at LearnHub as a content writer, even though I’m in the math faculty. Co-op allows you to experience a lot of cool stuff.

According to the McGill admission criteria: The GRE Test is recommended for the following applicants: those who do not have a B.Sc. or equivalent from a Canadian university; those who have been out of university for 5 years or more. Only the General Test is mandatory. For consideration, students must obtain a minimum score of 550 in verbal and quantitative categories and a score of 3.5 to 4 in analytical writing.

Other universities would probably ask for the same thing. You’ll also need a BSc degree, a GPA aevrage of at least 3.0/4.0, and a good TOEFL or IELTS score.

I’m not sure about which university would be best-rated for this particular program, but I would assume McGill should be a good choice, as will any university that has a well-known name.

From what I could find, most Masters programs in Canada do ask for GRE scores, especially for those who completed their undergraduate studies outside of North America. This seems to include Software Engineering in most places, but you should definitely consult an individual school once you choose one that you like.

You will definitely want to write the TOEFL sometime soon, since it will most likely be required to study in Canada. Our TOEFL Prep community can help you prepare.

To find some great programs that may fit your needs, consult our Canadian School Finder, which has a lot of programs in science and other professional programs as well. I hope you find something you like.

hi shrvn,

Do take a look at this link, for a list of universities in the US and Canada. Typically you would require a GMAT score for applying to MBA programs. As for the criteria, it would vary from one university to another. Could you shed more light on what program you are looking at?

Hi there Gujjar,

In order to be admitted into the University of Regina, you must demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency in the English language. That being said, the institution requires one of the following tests results to be received by the Admissions Office: TOEFL , IELTS, CanTest, CAEL, MELAB, or CELT.

Please refer to the University’s Undergraduate Admission page for official test scores.

Hi Gujjar,

For graduate studies at the University of Regina, a prospective Masters student from India should have a 1st class/Upper Division in his or her previous degree (or equivalent).

I believe that for a Masters in Industrial Engineering, you do not need the GRE. The GRE is only required by students who wish to do grad studies in Psychology. The university recommends that all international students take the GRE test in order to illustrate their academic abilities and potential (you will probably be better judged for doing so) but this is not a requirement.

Hope this helps!

I believe that not all Canadian universities require a GRE for master’s studies, although it would be preferred to have in order to get a better sense of academic ability and potential. Whether a GRE is mandatory or not depends on the school and on the discipline you are studying (Psychology, Physics, etc.)

hello lucyinthesky, thank you so much for ur decent reply.

in order to make 100% sure your admission, what one should do? in my opinion, Undergtaduates percentage or CGPA, IELTS band if english is not a language of instruction in undergraduation..and what else u would suggests?

2nd i know the minimum requirement of admission of uregina for Pakistani students i.e same as for India, bu now am asking you that i have almost 78% in my undergraduation upto last result and i will get round about 79-80% in final result.. so what you say in this regard either its a good score or not?

Your recommendations will clarify how good your marks are, as compared to that of other students in your college. Admission offers take the following parameters into account: () your academic performance () your recommendations () overall profile/work ex. (if applicable) () GRE score () IELTS band (if applicable)

Post masters, you can either opt in for a PhD or take up a job. As for placement statistics – they vary from one field to another. Do you have a specific specialization in mind?

I think you are in the appropriate percentage range for being accepted. And you’re right, the “1st Class/Upper Division in all degrees or equivalent” applies to Pakistan as well as India. :)

I think chandra_avinash means after you finish your Masters studies, you can continue your education even further to get a PhD. If you wish to look for work right after you finish your Masters studies, you will find the job scenario in Canada is quite good – it is competitive, but fair in finding a great job, especially when you build experience and transferable skills. A degree in engineering is great because it shows that you have the ability to analyze a product or service and help improve its use. This can apply to anything in business, from software to municipal roads to manufacturing.

If you need any further clarifications let us know.

2nd for co-op master programme, either, university decide after one year education or candidate have to apply for one of these programme at the time of applying?

Hi Gujjar,

Yes, you are right about the letters of recommendation. I believe at the University of Regina they call it Reference Forms.

After looking extensively at the site, the University does not really mention which program is easier to get into. I’m assuming that the more advanced degrees are listed in that order – since Master of Applied Science is 30 credit hours, Master of Engineering is 30 hours but is for students desiring professional rather than academic careers. And finally, the co-op version is the same except 42 credit hours. I would probably recommend the co-op if you want work experience to prepare you for your job…that might give you a head start.

For the co-op master programme, you should apply directly to that co-op program. I’m glad your hard work is paying off, Gujjar! :) Keep up the great work over there!

Now my question is about Co-op work that either university arranges for students or students have to find approprite job by theirself? And is there any tution fee for those 12 credit hours of work or what ?

Is there any pay of that work or you have to work without any salary, or financial support ?

Hi there Gujjar,

I’ll help you answer your question, seeing that I’m also a co-op student.

The University of Regina’s Career Center helps their co-op students by posting available co-op jobs on their database called, ProPlace. In this system, you and other co-op students can view and apply for co-op jobs. Usually, job categories are divided by your field of studies and will showcase placements that best relates to your major. Rest assured, you do not have to find and arrange your own co-op work term. However, sometimes you may in fact, find employment outside of ProPlace and the school might approve of that workplace for your work term.

Co-op program fees are typically an added cost included in your tuition. My co-op program costs an additional $500 CDN each academic term. In regards to pay, most placements offer their students competitive pay. However, it is also important to note that some placements may not and are volunteer positions. The job postings generally indicate whether or not the position is salary or non-salary based.

I hope that answers your question.
