Studying engineering can open many doors for your future. You may be surprised to learn that many famous people from a wide variety of disciplines hold degrees in engineering! Here are a few examples:


Alfred Hitchcock
Famous filmmaker
Hitchcock studied mechanical and electrical engineering at the London County Council School of Engineering. He became interested in photography and film, quickly rising from a title designer to film director. While only 30, Hitchcock had already become one of the most famous filmmakers in England. He then moved to Hollywood, directing a broad range of films and winning several Academy Awards. Some of his famous movies include The Birds, Psycho, and Shadow of a Doubt.



Boris Yeltsin
Former President of Russia
Yeltsin was a civil engineer and also studied construction. This helped him "engineer" a new Russia. Yeltsin was elected president of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic as the first popularly elected president. He eventually vowed to transform Russia into a free economy, and in less than 20 years of power he became a major international political figure.


Herbert Hoover
31st President of the United States
Hoover was a professional mining engineer who deeply believed in Effeciency Movement and finding technical solutions to social problems. During World War I he organized volunteers and entered public life and politics, eventually becoming Secretary of Commerce. He was elected President in 1929 and fought to relieve the Great Depression in the US.

Rowan Atkinson
British Comedian
Also known as Mr. Bean, Atkinson is one of the funniest British comedians alive. He is well-known for using a Charlie Chaplin-like visual style comedy as oppose of a dialogue. Mr. Atkinson studied electrical engineering at Newcastle University, and eventually made it into Oxford, where he got involved with comedy in the first place. With an estimated fortune of £100 million, Atkinson owns his very own car collection.


Fyodor Dostoevsky

Russian Author
After some engineering training, Fyodor became a writer and a philosopher. His famous works include Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, and he was a precursor of existentialism. Dostoyevsky is widely recognized as one of the greatest and most influential writers of all time.


Tom Landry
National Football League Coach
Landry was an industrial engineer who studied in the US and enjoyed football. Landry was coach of the Dallas Cowboys football team, renowned as one of the greatest and most innovative coaches in NFL history. The Cowboys had an amazing, never-been-duplicated streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons while he coached them.


Montel William
American Talk Show Host
Williams was the first African American to attend the prestigious Naval Academy Preparatory School. He holds a degree in naval engineering. A famous American celebrity and talk-show host of The Montel Williams Show, Williams made a big name for himself over the year.

Philip "Unabomber" Laak
Professional Poker Player
Laak studies mechanical engineering at the United States, and became an engineer for a while. Laak won the World Poker Tour in 2004, and has since been highly regarded as one of the top "cash game" poker players on the circuit.He's got lots of money, and he's also a small-time actor. What a cool guy!
