Question:
PhD in Management or Accounting/Commerce in Canada with Full funding...

Asked by gsripriya76

Hi, I am an M.Com, M.Phil (Mktg) qualified person with about 7+yrs overall experience in teaching Commerce to UG and PG students. I am very keen on pursuing a PhD in Management/Business Administration or Commerce/Accounting specialisations and looking forward for a program with full funding. Country is not a criteria though I am very keen to pursue the same in Canada.

Need some clarifications on the below doubts:
1. Pursuing a PhD in Management or Commerce/Accounting would be beneficial or is there any other specialisation which has greater scope in the future?
2. Which universities in Canada offer PhDs with full funding and how do I go about them?
3. Is GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS mandatory for admission to PhD?
4. Prior publications or research work mandatory for pursuing PhD other than MPhil?
5. Do Learnhub provide any guidance, counselling and help in going ahead with these plans?
6. What would be the cost involved in pursuing these programs if it's not a fully funded program?
7. What are the universities offering PhD in the above areas in Canada, what are the application deadlines, process of application etc?
8. If not Canada, which other countries would be better for furthuring these plans and what are the universities offering these programs, funding details and admission deadlines, processes etc.

Appreciate if these doubts are clarified at the earliest

Regards,
RSP

    Hello Priya,

Though PhD is one of the most prestigious that many dream to earn, one must remember it is solely for those who have a genuine in research work. A PhD should however, benefit your profile professionally. Though almost every location today offers the degree, the proceedings, requirements, funding options and fee structure varies in every location.

Now since you have specified Canada as one of your choice, please note a good number of Canadian universities offer PhD degrees in varying disciplines. As an international applicant you need to consider the standardized test GRE and the either of the English Proficiency Test (TOEFL / IELTS) though IELTS is recommended if Canada is your prime consideration.

The application proceeding is similar to the that of a Masters degree and you need to suffice with the transcripts, test scores (GRE and TOEFL) cards, statement of purpose, reference letters, paper presentations / publications, research proposal and resume. Hence work on all these aspects to increase your chances for financial assistance from the universities.

Before you finalize on the universities, go through the relevant department and review the research areas in the department. Go through the work / pursuing work of the faculty members and select one or two members and update them of your profile. Since the seats for the PhD program are limited in comparison to the other degrees, the response from the professors would help you analyze where you stand. In fact many a times they advise you with the further proceedings and your chances to get the financial assistance.

However, with regard to the financial assistance as such no fixed policy exists for any particular university.

There are different ways to avail the scholarships or funds for PhD programs. They come in different ways such as doctoral scholarships, fellowships, research and teaching assistantships, loans, personal savings and support from an employer and employment earnings among others.

A brief description the same should be of helps. One way of funding postgraduate education is through a grant that is the money given to a PhD student by a donor based on a financial need or course of study. The donor can be an individual, corporation, government or non-government association. The foremost advantage of receiving a grant, is that it does not need to be paid back.

Find below the most common options available to finance a PhD from Canada:

    University-Specific Ph.D. Scholarships :

Often, the universities that provide the most scholarship opportunities for doctoral students are large research institutions that require Ph.D students to work on ongoing research projects with supervising professors. Hence carefully look into available scholarships for each degree or program before applying.

Scholarship and fellowship is another type of PhD funding that does not need to be repaid by a student. The award of a scholarship or fellowship is based primarily on the qualities of the candidate, such as academic excellence and talent.

Apply for a teaching or research assistant position. An assistant position benefits you with the capacity to learn while being compensated with a stipend and a decrease in tuition fee. As an assistant, you will work in conjunction with the faculty and gain further knowledge that can improve his or her prospects of attaining a PhD degree. If you have good score on TOEFL, your chances are even more bright.

    Private Scholarships

Many companies and organizations award scholarships to Ph.D. students with excellent academic records or other experience.

The other kind of scholarships that you can consider are listed below :

    • Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute
    • National Science and Engineering Research Council
    • National Research Council of Canada
    • Quebec Provincial Government Scholarships

I hope the above stated takes care of your queries.

    Good luck!
